When will intel and amd be releasing quad core processors to the mainstream?

And should i wait? I'm thinking about buying a new laptop, but i dont really want to drop two grand or more if the new product cycle is just going to start right after i do that.

Any advice would be great as well, as i'm looking at a high res 17inch notebook. Sony and Asus are looking good right now. price range ~2000

The new product cycles will ALWAYS be around the corner when dealing with computer BS. This is why I always stay just behind the curve anyway. The quads for intel as far as I know are pretty mainstream right now. Although I don't know if they are common in laptops though. Nor do I feel the extra power consumption on a mobile is worth the other 2 cores.

IOW, pull the trigger and be ****ing happy.

Well i'm not concerned about power consumption, as it will sit on my desk most the time anyway. I rarely use it on my lap at all, its plugged in 99% of the time. I just need something that i can pack up easily when i visit my girlfriend, parents, or goto the lakehouse, etc. etc. Not to mention a 17"er isn't really lap friendly. But i understand where you are coming from you taint licking bastard.

Um, remember a couple months ago you wanted to get a puter and I told you to hold off a bit until the quad cores dropped in price? They were already out back then.
Right now they are oober low in price so it is a good time to jump on one. I'm still going to hold out until the sell for $270 per CPU. That's when I will jump. Might be a long time though. lawl
I remember that, and i still view them as being in the enthusiast market. I'm talking about when the next generation of quad cores comes out and bumps these down in price. Or whatever the solution is that will bring the prices down to something that is able to be packaged in an affordable fashion.

Good point. A dual core would be a good steal for a lappy.
Fo Sho'

A dual core in a mobile would be plenty of processing power for some time to come, IMO. In conjunction with the Sony and Asus models, also check out the newer HP dv9500t.... free shipping and $150 instant rebate right now if it interests you.

New products are always going to be out. Keep waiting and you will never buy anything. With a budget of 2k for a laptop you should be able to get a really nice laptop that would do anything you need it to do.

Give them a year and quad processors will be down to a somewhat affordable price.
thats what i didn't want to hear.

wheres jmac when you need him?

looks like i might be going the dual core route. would be nice if i could get a desktop processor. i'm not concerned about saving power.

Not a common practice for lappy makers to use desktop chips anymore. The power just isn't need by the market of laptops. They used to when P4 was their primary and makers wanted to squeeze a lot of power out for "mobile gamers". Right now though mobile dual cores are fitting the bill just fine. You are in a minority at this point. It's not that the quads soak that much more power either, its just right at a point of diminishing returns for laptop makers. I guess you have to hope some cool app or game makes your want a necessity to more. otherwise you wait for now //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/frown.gif.a3531fa0534503350665a1e957861287.gif sorry.

Well theres a few reasons i want that extra power.

Completely superficial reasons, dont want to have buyers remorse, etc. etc.

I multi task a lot

I dont like waiting around for things to render, or be encrypted, decrypted, etc. etc.

Things like that.

But you're completly right about wants versus necessities.

One of the things i'm going to do to lessen the strain is delegate my current laptop to dutys such as playing music and managing torrents. Freeing up the new one for watching movies, using photoshop, etc. etc.
