whats the sole purpose of big subwoofers??

You can't hear it, but you can certainly feel it. Pipe organs have fundamental notes that are below 20Hz.

What about less coil travel for a given SPL, keeping the coil more in the gap, reducing BL nonlinearities...etc...

With a trunk car, I'd really want to try a 15" IDW in IB //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
How many songs actually play below 20hz? Hardly any.

18s are cool...they just take up a lot of space. I had a nightshade 18 and loved it....but, i've moved on and diggin my 10s..lol droppin dem lows //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

x2

bigger subs generally play lower frequencies better. and sub sonic frequencies are awesome to feel //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/crazy.gif.c13912c32de98515d3142759a824dae7.gif

Ive been wondering the same thing for a bit now. But instead of asking ive decided to say screw it and get 2 15" DSCs instead of my 2 12" Type Rs. Running 1500 total...guessing the 2 15s would be louder than a single 18 in a trunk car? Loud enough to make neighbors/others hear the bass when I want them to...and other times just enough for me.

Anyways yea...great thread. Surprising to see no bashing on the OP though o_O

YET

Dont completely understand the cone area thing.

Wouldnt 2 12" subs have a larger area than a 18?

I mean just looking at it...with the VERY little geometry knowledge I got...2 12" subs=24" total inches and 18"...just being 18...starting to think I shouldnt have slept/cheated through that class in high school...

Cone area is measured in 3.14(pie) r^2 r= radius. if you do the math a 18 has more then 2 -12's. Power handling as said above depends on many factors.
With 2 12's you could have more motor strength and cooling, if the subs are similar. This would be safer and possibly louder. There is no exact way to judge. Power ratings and size isnt all that counts.

I personally am trying to understand the T/S parameters of subs to compare, these values hold lots of importance when comparing. If you have subs in mind, share as many people can help you distinguish between them. But from a generic point its hard to say whats better.
spelled pi for future reference

yes and no. lets say the 12" subs are a small round pizza and the 18" is a XL round pizza. sure there are more slices from the small pizzas....but think about it. the XL round pizza has bigger slices, meaning it "could" be louder.

How exactly does 1 - 18" have more cone area than 2 - 12"s ??
