whats it mean when a sub clips?

**** the way i installed my shit, is anti theft, no one could steal shit unless you had 4 ppl with ya, ya need 2 ppl just to pull the box out, i can do it myself but i dont wanna mess up the trunk rubbers.

 
Think of clipping like this;

The signal you send the sub is like an instruction; the wave goes up, the cone moves out. The wave goes down, the cone moves in; When you crank the gains up, it makes the signal 'bigger' - so the instruction to move the cone out wants to move the cone further than it can go; since it can't go, the coils are still charged to move out, even though the cone has stopped - which instead of turning the energy into movement, turns it into heat.
