Whats good for SQ?

I listen to all types of music and want a 12" sub(s). I am looking for good SQ and do not need tons of bass. Would I be better off with 2 subs or would I be better off taking the same amount of $$ and getting one good sub. I guess if i got one sub, i would want one that has some good spl along with the SQ. Im not too sure what I need to spend for good sound quality.

Suggestions for different price ranges would be good. What would be good subs at good prices in $100-200, $200-300?

Chris

I'd look into getting a single high quality 15 rather than 2 mediocre 12's. Better sq and output should be about the same. I personally run a soundsplinter rl-p 15 and I love it. Awesome all around sub.

If you think the outpur of a single 15 would be too much for you though a high quality 12 would suit your needs well. In that price range, you could get a ss rl-p, aa avalanche, type x, or an eD 13ov.2. DO a little research and you should findd all the info you need on thsoe subs. It has been posted millions of times.

How does the type-x compare to others? Does it compare to a JL 12w7? and is it a good idea to go with a type-x over 2 type-rs?

Chris
type x isnt exactly in the w7 category, but it does sound pretty good imo. The sq is definitely better than type r's so if thats all you want then a single type x would be better than a pair of r's.

I personally would choose an rl-p over a type x though. i have heard both and both were nice but the rl-p sounds a little better to me. I havent heard an avalanche yet, but I would still take one over the type x based upon the good reviews its been getting so far. Besides, help support the little guys. You'll get 1000000000000 x better customer service and I think youll ultimately be more satisfied.

BTW, check out http://www.ascendantaudio.com and http://www.soundsplinter.com for more info.

Yeah..Strictly SQ...What OHM rating should I be looking for? I do not have an amp yet.

As for the RL-p... i noticed it has a lower RMS rating than the type-r(about half). If I can get the same SQ and feel from a sub with a lower wattage, im assuming that would be good too?

You must have been looking at the rl-i which would be an awesome sq driver as well. you could pick up a pair of those for 300 or just one if you dont want much output. The sq of the rl-p and the rl-i is supposed to be very similar but the rl-p has higher excursion and higher power handling so it can get louder.

the less power you need to get a sub moving is generally good because less power = cheaper amp.

So the RL-p is a good choice. Is there any others that would keep the cost down on the amp. Their site says 500watts RMS. What would be a good/efficient sub/amp (12")setup that would give me excellent SQ, while keeping costs at an average or better? It looks like the type-x will need a much stronger amp while some other SQ subs require alot less watts. I need to buy a sub and amp.. so if the price of the sub goes up, that might not be a big deal as the price of the amp should go down.. if the sub doesnt consume as many watts

Chris

What kind of amp do you have. No sense in getting a 1000+ watt woofer when you only have 300w RMS.
he don't have one yet.

i would look into the RL-p with an amp that does around 7-800w RMS @ 2ohm ( for a single RL-p) they are all 4ohm DVC.

just because they are rated at 500w, don't let that fool you. i've got mine running off 750-800w a piece. i've heard of them taking 1200w daily.

but i recommend the RL-p's. sound d@mn good, and get real loud:crazy:

my two arc audio 12" subs are super SQ in the for sale section--hint hint

no but seriously

look into the arc audio 12", the id12v.3, the ascendant audio atlas 12" (need a big box ), and the Soundsplinter rl-p 12" (needs a ton of power)

all those are a great buys and will have very nice SQ, and soem more SQL than othera

i've actually heard alpine type-x's and they are awesome subs for sq and for spl. you're probably looking at close to $250 for a shipped type-x. as far as customer service--i'm a loyal alpine customer who has interfaced with their customer service many times before and have NEVER had a problem with them to include them honoring a warranty.

Im not sure where you heard the ss rl-p needs a ton of power, but Mike has actually recommended anywhere from 300-900w for it. 300w really is nothing for a sub and an amp that poweful can be ofund very cheap.

Jellyfish, it sound like hes not after spl so much, so imo he would be just as well of with a 500w amp and he would save some cash.

All those are great options, as are the OZ Audio Matrix Elites, JL W6v2 (if you have some $$ to spend), Image Dynamics IDMax (can be had for good prices used), Adire Shiva, Adire Koda10 and Creative Sounds SX10 (not 12's, but still good options to look at), Adire Brahma, Stereo Integrity Magnum D2 (if you can find one used).

And yeah, the Rl-p's definitely don't need tons of power.
