Whats a good Scotch?

How much are you willing to spend?

Glenlivet and 'fiddich are both OK for introductory single malts. Neither is that impressive, but you could do worse.

I can't speak for exact prices where you are, but things really start branching out when you get to the next level above those - $50 around here, but may be cheaper where you are if you don't have a state-run liquor system. Laphroaig and Ardbeg are two of my favorites; they're Islay malts and have a very peaty taste compared to what you may be used to.

If peat isn't your thing, Glenmorangie is a highland malt for about the same price. Not as strong, but still a worthwhile upgrade from the $30 bottles.

Macallan may have a bottle in the $40-50 range (probably only a 10 or 12yr at most), but I've had up to the 18yr and still was bored by it. If you don't mind Speysides like Glenlivet, by all means go for it.

at least around here, glenlivet is $60 for a liter of the 12 year. That would be my recommendation, it's a great blend of scotch.

I was gonna suggest Glenlivet or Glenfiddich for something to get you started. Working at a bar, I see that ordered pretty often when it comes to Scotch.

Dewar's is the cheapest I'd go for a blended, and still consider it drinkable.

Anything under that tastes like lighter fluid.
