What would a "+12 Vdc source" be?

Probably a very simple question here. What I have, is a remote gain control knob, running it from my amp to the panel under my steering wheel. Coming from the knob, are 3 wires. One 1/8" plug for the amp, and two other wires used for night time illumination. One red, one green. You're supposed to ground the color of the wire you don't want to use, and connect the other to a "+12 Vdc source" according to the manual.

I called a friend, asked his opinion, he thought maybe splicing it into the amp's remote power wire?

What do you guys think?

Thanks to anyone that can help.

It means 12 Volts Direct Current. Describes a common US car's electrical system. It means run that wire to your battery's positive terminal, or a 12V terminal on your car's circuit panel. You could splice into that amp remote wire.

Why would you want the remote wire spliced into the +12V constant?

You don't you use the remote from your HU to turn on the amp?
What exactly are you trying to wire up? Amp or HU? I am confused.
Remote knob for the amp.

To get the illumination, wire it to a 12V source that turns on with the car. Lighter socket, or ACC are usually easy to find and things like that. If you connect it to the amp remote, it may not have enough current to power the illumination, and if you hook it straight the to battery it won't turn off with the car unless it uses the amp as a turn on, but I doubt it.

I think I understand...your "bass" knob requires you to find a +12V constant, accessory, and ground? What kind of stupid shit is that? Most of them just use a telephone cord type of deal.

maybe its a switch he is putting inline with his remote wire? //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/confused.gif.e820e0216602db4765798ac39d28caa9.gif

Or it has an illumination on it?

Hes talking about this remote gain control illumination power source.l. Anyways, do not splice it into the remote wire from your HU it will mess up the voltage going to the amplifiers remote turn on circuit.

I dunno...it doesn't take that much voltage to turn on an amp.

I would splice into cigarette lighter or some shit like the other guy said.

Still curious why it needs a constant? Does it have a memory or something. It doesn't take that much power to light a bulb.

You can tap into the main power wire that feeds your head unit.

From my understanding, it has a more advanced illumination feature then most remote knobs that just have the blue/green/whatever color LED showing that power is on.

I'm not sure though, never really seen a bass knob that needed a seperate +12V power source
