What to use to fill door panel gap?

I just installed a set of Polk Momo MM6's in my doors and they sound incredible, but I have a problem. I'll try to get pics up tonight of what I am talking about. I mounted them on my door panel (the plastic part) because they wouldn't fit in the metal part of my door because of my windows. Unfortunately the hole in my door panel is oval shaped, and the speakers are round. The speakers are 6 3/4" and the door panle is like 6 3/4" x 8"

I can literally reach through the gap on either side and touch the back of the magnet:crap:, and I figured I am losing all of my midbass. My question is what do I use to fill the gaps? I can't fiberglass, and the door panel is convex so I can't really use a piece of mdf or a ring adapter, I was thinking more along the lines of liquid deadener or clay or something.

Post those pics...I think that will help get you the proper solution.

Some ideas ( again trying to picture your issue without pictures //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif ) would be to seal the gap with some sound deadening material (like Dynamat or similar) that is stiff and thick enough and has a really good adhesive. Or maybe use a speaker baffle?

Just some thoughts but post the pics and that will probably help get you some good advice. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/biggrin.gif.d71a5d36fcbab170f2364c9f2e3946cb.gif

Use the expanding foam. aka fun stuff...spray in the gaps, cut the extra off with a knife. Lay in your baffle ring, put the leather(what ever you like) over it. stable or glue it on, slap on the speaker...good as new, thats what i did...idk how to fiber glass.

Ok, I will definately get some pics up around 5:30 ish (I'm at school right now).

The shape of the mounting hole is wierd and like I said it is convex so I wouldn't be able to use a solid piece of wood as a baffle or a ring, but that is really hard to explain in words, so I'll put pics up tonight.

Sounds like you made a mistake by cutting them into the door panels. What you should have done was make some 3/4 inch wood MDF baffle plates to mount them to. Do you have them all floppy now scince it is only attached to the door panel? The wood baffle with some deadener should seal it up. for your question, but I think you might have another problem now.

No they aren't floppy, they are bolted to the door panel pretty well, they don't move when I open and shut my doors, and they don't move when they play, if that's what you're asking.

Here is the tweet:

And here are shots of the mid, you can see the gap, and you can also see what I mean about the door panel curving, it isn't a flat surface:

Hmmm...ok, thanks for the pics!

I see what you mean. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/tongue.gif.6130eb82179565f6db8d26d6001dcd24.gif

You said you couldn't mount them behind the panel and to the door itself due to clearance issues, correct? Is the mounting depth such that it either does not sit flush or it would interfere with the window?

Fiberglassing would be the best solution but if you aren't comfortable with doing it, it could end up messy.

I'm curious if there may be a grill of some sort your could mount such that it would cover the odd shaped hole as well as the speaker. I know you put the stock grill on the speaker and yes, it doesn't look pretty.

take the speaker out, make a mounting ring out of mdf that covers the gaps as well. then take the panel off, mask it, put your new mounting ring/baffle in place, and apply rage gold or similar filler around the ring on the masked door. let it kick off. then pull it off the door, sand it smooth and paint it. then your done. got it??
