WHAT THE..... Single band parametric equalizer?

I was playing with the settings on my Kicker SX900.2 with DSP and noticed that it has a single band parametric EQ. Even after reading the instructions I have no idea what this does or how to use it. I can adjust the frequency at any 1/12th octave. I can also adjust bandwidth (or Q) from .5 to 10 in .5 increments. I can also adjust the boost of the EQ +/- 18 db. Does anyone have any idea what the crap this is and how to use it? Do I even want to use it at all? It will be powering my 2 12" Boston G5's in a sealed box Q-tune: (HP and Q) = 28hz@0.707

thats what the paperwork said in regards to the enclosure? Built to their specs it says Q-tune: (HP and Q) = 28hz@0.707

I have no idea what it means

A parametric EQ lets you pick a frequency to boost or cut as well adjust the Q (bandwidth centered on that frequency). 1.1 would be a very narrow bandwidth (Q) and .577 would be a wide bandwidth (Q).

thanks for the info. How would one go about figuring out what frequencies to boost and so forth? I think the default setting is 40hz with a bandwidth of 3.

It's up to your ears. All speakers have dips and peaks, if you using the box provided by the manual, then they list the frequency response within it. You can look to see where you might need to boost/cut if you think it's a big problem. You can buy things to capture the frequency response of a speaker, but it will probably cost as much as your system. I always just use my ear and tune it to the way I like it to sound.

No it wont.//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/rolleyes.gif.c1fef805e9d1464d377451cd5bc18bfb.gif, A sealed enclosure does not have a tune. A ported enclosure has a tune.
Fixed to be more helpful.

Sometimes a subsonic filter is followed by this type of EQ, in that case you can set it just beneath your tuning frequency of your vented enclosure to control cone motion once the enclosure unloads so that you can apply more power at the tuning frequency.

If you are using a small sealed enclosure, you can use it to boost the lowest, least efficient frequencies if the driver can handle the added excursion or the upper bass 40 - 50hz if you have a large, sealed enclosure that is lacking in upper output.

Lastly, if your EQ allows you to cut by any amount, you can use it to remove boomy bass that sounds like a one-note type of thing.

It's all up to you. Just know that when you boost frequency response, you are placing large demands on the amplifier's output capabilities and you risk clipping.
