You should know what something is before buying it/putting it in your car. Could be ecu from diff. car which will f'k things up.

no need to show attitude. people are only trying to help. they are giving very accuate advice. you really sure know what is about to go on your car...especially anything with the ECU. it is a full ECU, and may possibly not be something that you want to put in your car. what is wrong with the one that is in your car now? is this one an upgraded tuning computer? if your ECU has an extremely different ECU #, things could easily mess up, as in a crashing of your electrical system...resulting in full failure of your car. seriously, i would figure out if it will be compatible before you swap your ECU. just my advice.

i got the car for xmas, the pervious owner bought it but never installed it obviously. so he just gave it to me. i doubt the guy would give me a random part that wont even be compatible with the car

You do not know what it exactly is, it could be a factory replacement or it could be an upgrade... Or it could be for another vehicle that the guy just left in the car... You have no idea; so I reccomend you have someone that knows about it take a look at it (and not your dad...), or do some heavy research on the internet and figure out exactly what it will do for your car. If it isnt directly compatable with your car then it could royaly cause damage. And if the guy just had it, maybe he needed another part to make it work, you never know....

Regardless, I wouldnt just drop it in and see how it works.

And are you going to race? If not, why try to upgrade performance(if it happens to be an upgrade)?
