What is the difference between 12" subs and 15" subs?

I switched to a 15 from a 12 and basically all i really saw was that people could hear me farther away and you could feel the bass a lot more. But in an suv i would suggest the 15's if you have the space why not go a little bigger and with a 15 you still typically retain a decent amount of sound quality. Hope it helps you somewhat
^yay first post!! after 5 months??

wow agreed everyone just goes into too much depth on the issue.

Pros of 15's:

Can have a higher DB

can have higher RMS then 12's

Has bigger cone area in results in more air movement(louder)

Hits lows depending on cone area.

Produces Bigger sound waves.

Cons of 15's:

Not as accurate(refering to speed the woofer vibrates at)especially for like metal music with double bass. they are not very accurate in hitting that type of bass notes.

cant hit highs very well.

They are not very punchy. 15's are usally made for excusaions. long held out bass notes.

Pros of 12's

Very punchy.

Accurate bass

hits a wide range of notes

depending on brand they are very clear sounding

Cons of 12's

they dont hit low notes like 15's do.

pending on cone size/brand/type of sub and all the variables they are most of the time not as loud.

they dont hold up very long when they are used for excurtions.

they dont move as much air BUT!!!!!! that depends on cone size and sub tpe and brand

ALL OF ABOVE DEPENDS ON AMP,SUB BRAND,SPL SUB OR NOT,AND DB RATINGS. SO DONT ***** ABOUT HOW SOMEHTIGN COULD BE DIFFERNT DEPENDING ON THE CIRCUMSTANCES!!!BECAUSE I JUST SAID IT ALL DEPENDS ON THE VARIABLES.

hope that helps u out

I am one of the people that think some of these "gurus" on this forum make things a little more complicated than they really are. But, you sir, get ready. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/hide.gif.2d479cfd917eedfe201353b91522ceab.gif

Wow, you just made a ton of stereotypes without being specific enough. I don't care if you think some people on here make things too complicated, what you posted was just completely misleading.

There's a reson why people go into great detail about arguments like this...it's because the details matter. What you stated above are the general misconceptions about subwoofers that everyone needs to be taught NOT to believe.

Then don't make broad stereotypes if you know that there isn't one true statement that you had previously made...seems simple, doesn't it? This is why we always say "it depends."

i think we should probably just let him keep believing this to be true. there were 291 posts prior to his, i am betting that he failed to read any of them. had he taken the time, he would have seen that he just re-inforced every single inaccurate posts in this thread, which there are many...

so slamminsound, i tip my hat to you and your fail.

i read every post up in here, and yet i still believe that 15's are boomier than 12's, could be just my exposures to every 15 and 12 i've heard though

i guess by boomier i mean things seem to "wobble" more and not really sure how else to describe it. but i must admit i've never compared same brands, but they were getting same power

You mean, the 15's got louder/moved more air? The main reason why eople think that bigger subs sound "boomy" is because they don't have a front stage that a big sub can blend in with. Having sufficient midbass from your front stage is key to being able to keep up with a bigger sub, otherwise there seems to be a gap in the music, which makes the sub stand out, and therefore, sounds "boomy."

Also Hydrastas, please tell me you're not running three subs from three different brands, and also two different sizes? And with stock speakers too???? You've been here for two years and have 600 posts...have you not learned anything?

Front speakers: Stock

Subs: American Bass DX-15, a pioneer 12 and a sony 12

Box: 1 cubed box sealed for 15, dual sealed 1 cubed boxs for 12s

i read every post up in here, and yet i still believe that woofers with a higher QTS sound boomier than woofers with a lower QTS. i fully admit and understand that QTS is a parameter of a woofers T/S measurements which in NO WAY is related to cone size whatsoever. i will repeat that the QTS is not related to cone size, ever.
i fixed it for accuracy for you //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
