What is the difference between 12" subs and 15" subs?

is this a better question...how do people decide on what size subwoofer(s) to get? (besides the obvious reason...space issues)

Realisitcally? Most just fit the biggest they can in, or have some preconceived notion about what size sub they need based on the 'perfect' size (usually 10's or 12's for those guys).
People who know what they are doing size ther subs according to what they need to fill the gap in the rest of their system. This means level matching, frequency matching, etc. For example, make a poll, see how many of the guys here running 18" subs have 6.5's or smaller as the next biggest sized speaker in their system. Or, watch the next several threads you see where people ask what sized subs to get... almost none will have someone responding asking anything about the rest of the system they should be trying to blend with, its not even considered.

Balanced systems are few and far between these days. No, speaker size choice these days is based mostly on voodoo, rumors, bragging rights and simple aesthetics. Pretty sad really.

This same old arguement. Someone (falsely) makes the claim that cone size is determinate on output ability or low-end response. People argue a while. Then OP brings on specs from lines of subs that shows a lower Fs as sub sizes increase, proof he thinks. Unfortunately he's lost track of the fact that just because for a given line of woofers, the Fs goes lower upon increasing model size, this does not mean cone size is determinate on low-end reponse.
There 15" models of some subs out there that would be put to shame, at say 20hz, by some other 8 or 10" subs of other brands/models out there. Therefore even simple common sense should dictate that while cone area does affect Fs, output/sensitivity, etc, it is NOT the determining factor in these specs.

Usually when these arguements boil down to this point, the OP knows he is wrong and is just grasping an any attempt to, well, not look wrong. Foote is making the incorrect correlation between specs in model lines, and making generic statements about cone size. IIRC Cotjones made the same mistake, which lead to this same arguement, not too long ago. Now here we are again.

The sad part is, on these boards over the years Ive seen, read, participated in, and then finally ignored due to boredom... hundreds of discussions about this very same topic. Yet here comes Foote with his ever-so-basic knowledge of speaker specs to let me and everyone else here know his little secret he's found, that none of us have ever even considered. Ok, so you people say that it DEPENDS on the car its in, or what kind of box, etc. even people comparing differnt brand 12s vs different brand 15s. WTF? Well you are idiots. We are observing the ONE variable: the size differnce in the sub. So in observing and analyzing a SINGLE factor, all other factors must BE THE SAME IN BOTH CASES in order to get constant results (****in 3rd grade Science you MORONS) So that means....

SAME car, same motor, same model, same box (only bigger for the 15s of course, same music, same amp, same everything with the ONLY difference being that one is 15 and the other is 12 then the 15 WILL BE LOUDER (because it is moving more air) without any doubt and there is NOTHING You little peter-puffing pansies can say or do to change this OBVIOUS fact. And, over 90% of the time the 15 inch model will not only be louder, but also handle lower hz. better than the 12. EVEN IF IT IS AN AMMOUNT THAT YOU FEGS SAY IS NOT NOTICABLE, it STILL is lower.

Or that cone size does not affect low-end out put or sensitivity in any way.
