Perhaps the best way to proceed with an argument is to define the conditions in which your argument is true.
For example, there can be two aspects to this discussion...
1. The physical parts stay the same except for the cone, where a cone of a larger diameter is used.
2. The measured parameters stay the same except for Sd, where the Sd is increased by using a cone with a larger diameter.
They are two very different instances and I think this is where Foote's confusion is coming from.
