What is so bad about pre-fab boxes?

I had my XXX in a pre-fab sub zone box, and according to the site, it was made out of 3/4 MDF, like most custom boxes. http://www.subzoneusa.com/single_hatch.htm

So why does everyone hate on pre-fab boxes?

sub zone is fine. their sealed boxes look nice and work great for a quick easy system.

About the only thing wrong with prefab boxes is that they usually arent built matched to each sub for optimum performance. And I have noticed a good majority of the ported box lack port area.

Very true. Every install requires a little tweaking for maximum potential.

But, if you aren't concerned with maximum potential than a good pre-fab box is fine...

if your going sealed then id say pre-fab is fine as long as its the size you need, but no pre-fab if you want ported, make your own or have someone build it for you

they arnt just slapped together. they are built pretty solid. better then most people do around here.

I tend to agree the post made about optimum performance for a ported box. I certainly don't think all pre-fab boxes are bad. by no means, but most likely it will not be to specs for you paticular application.

I've seen sites where you can buy either small .5-.8 ft^3, mid .9-1.2ft^3, and then large, whatever they have. If the box is made of 3/4" or better MDF, I'd say get the box that overshoots your needs volume wise, and buy some extra MDF and start adding to bring it down to your required volume. Heck, make some bracing to subtract volume for more strength.

I made a box custom for my trunk, and I'm pretty sure it ended up too small cuz the sub sounds horrid. I think I'm gonna save and get something custom made from audio integrations.
