What is Mounting Depth?

Sorry Guys, I'm new to Audio. But could someone help me out. In example, I'm looking at getting an XXX 15. Which the mounting depth is 8.75". They way I'm taking it, is I will need a box, 8.75" wide, then a couple more inches for it to work. So would I be looking at about a 12" wide box?

how the deep is sub is

Not really 12" wide but really 12" deep.

actaully its more like 16inches wide
