What is clipping?

Car audio noob so bare with me. I know it's bad and that's about it. I want to know what it is so I know if it's happening. I have 2 brand new RF 12" and sometimes they give off a smell. Depends on how long, how much power and where the gain is set in whether the smell is fine or not. What is your head unit's pre-out voltage? Also just so we know where is the gain at?

The gain and everything else was set by the shop I got them installed at. The guy said the smell would be normal. I don't know the voltage of my HU but it's a Kenwood KDC X496.

8 days ago...been using them pretty frequently. I might be just worrying too much. Idk....I can give you a run down of my setup if it helps.

What does it even smell like? It could just be the box and the HU has 4 volts pre-outs. If the gain is past 1/4-2/5ths they most likely set it wrong or have you maybe boosted the bass through the Head Unit?

The smell could just be excess glue burning off but being RF I could see why I would be worried. Call shop and ask how they went about setting your gains.. If they say by ear then run down to shop slap the manager and find a new shop.

I don't know how to explain the smell. Kinda sour i guess... And I made sure that the bass boost wasn't on. The guy at the shop told me not to mess with anything on the amp so I'm guessing they made sure it was set right if they mentioned not messing with it.

I hope it is! They sound great besides all the rattling from the spare tire well. Is there a way to know for sure?
