What exactly does a higher Xmax on a sub provide?

what would be better suited for the RE Audio XXX 15..........a sealed enclosure or a vented enclosure? i am building a predominantly sound quality type system this go around with a fully active 4-way front stage and rear fill.....but i also want to be able to change a few eq and crossover settings on the fly and pound the lows out hard every now and again.......i have around 5 cubic feet to dedicate to net volume of whatever enclosure i decide to build......what would anyone suggest for me? Small vented, large vented, small ported, large ported? whats gonna sound really NICE and CLEAN when kept in line eq wise but then be able to crush my chest if I so felt like it? lol

EBP on the XXX 15 suggests a sealed box design would work best. Qts suggests a large sealed box.

'Vented' and 'ported' boxes are the same thing. Typo?

Could you explain briefly maybe what EBP and QTS are and what they affect or why they are important?

And yes that was a typo....meant to type sealed on the first two....lol

which enclosure would be best suited for my needs in a truck enviroment?

Here's a random site I found that should answer those questions for you. http://www.decibelcar.com/menudiy/61.html

I dont know how to answer what would fit your needs best, because your needs are subjective. You have said you want sound quality (obviously with good output though, since you are looking at a 15" XXX). For that sub, and that very general description of your 'needs', Id say a sealed setup is probably the best choice. But again I have to make a lot of assumptions to conclude that, so my best advice would be to stick around this site for a while, educate yourself on the basics, and make your own informed decision.

Xmax is none of the above. Xmax is simply a static measurement that takes 2 components into consideration (not movement). You can have a subwoofer with an Xmax of 54mm because the coil hangs below the standard top plate exactly 54mm. That same sub can have the coil resting on the back plate and not be able to move 0.0001mm rearward of its resting position. Any design from that ridiculous example all the way to the XXX OP mentioned can be a reality, and with my industry manufacturing background, let me tell you…..you give many companies way too much credit!

Just clearing up the Xmax hooplah. It's VC overhang and has nothing to do with motion or clearance.

With 5 cubic feet available, it doesn't matter, you won't be using it if you utilized the most efficient design for either sub in that amount of volume (unless it's some thin weird shape). If the shape is loosely close to a cube, you should likely be using a rear-wave manipulated design of some sort.

the xxx is a great design and shouldn't be overlooked for applications that require very low f3s even ported..

if you want sick lowend and you have some serious power they them out..

they are absolute lowend monsters.. they use 2 huge 3" coils that can take 6kw daily but efficiency suffers and motor strength is lacking for the moving mass..so don't expect vision blurring highend..

if you want a good sounding woofer with a ton of output the xcon is a nice woofer..

the zcon is a monster I'm not sure if they use a shorting ring..

the zcon can handle 2kw and sound fine ported..

I'd use 3.5 tuned to 32 with 50in^2 of port area for daily..

Both are very nice. I suspect along with holic that if you went with the XXX you'd be happy with a 4-5 cube sealed box. You could always add some round ports down the road if you wanted a bit more output.

Im not sure what your unrealistic example of a sub with 54mm of overhang, but is designed to rest against the backplate, proves. I discussed in pretty good detail what xmax is, including explaining the 'VC overhang' method of deriving xmax and the fact that this is a less accurate way to describe xmax. In your example of 54mm of overhang, but 0.0001mm of rearward clearance, that design's xmech would be 0.0001 mm, thus the xmax would also be 0.0001 mm. xmax most definitely has to do with motion and clearance, as I described previously in this thread.

Who are you saying is giving companies too much credit, and how so? Just curious.
