What does this bracket do?

This is the engine bay of a 2004 yukon. I was looking for a place to put another battery but this bracket is in the way. I'm assuming it serves a purpose, since someone put it there, but I can't figure out what that purpose is. There's also an identical brcaket on the other side. Anyone have input? Thanks.

when taking corners or backing out of driveways, or anything that flexes the car... that is there to prevent excessive flex, and possibly to prevent stress cracks (caused by the flexing back and forth).

i'm not 100% but thats what it looks like to me.

I tried putting a battery there, but it was too much work to make it stay. You have to build something to hold it in place and my yellowtops wouldn't fit in the space so i didn't go that route.

Making it stay would be the easy part. A couple straps should to the trick. My question is, would it be a bad idea to remove the bracket?

You can get a small enough battery with enough juice to fit with the bracket staying. Just remove the bracket put in battery and put it back. I would find a resonable way to mount the battery instead of just strapping in into the engine bay like that.

That bracket also acts as a brace for any impact on the sides.

Ratchet straps would be more than sufficient, and more than reasonable for a battery... Seen it and done it many times.
