what does "active" mean?

basically you dont use the crossover, leave settings flat on radio, have an amp on mids and highs seperate, do all your tuning on the amps.

Active = running a component set without a crossover.

Pros: customizable crossover points, increased efficiency, more flexibility, individual time alignment for the woofer and tweeter (assuming your HU has that ability)

Cons: takes more amplification, more complex, endless tuning.

One amp for the sub
One amp for the mids

One amp for the tweets
Not necessarily..

And it means not using the passive X-overs and using some form on electronic X-over to set your own crossover points for each component.

I have been trying to gather a little bit here and there from what you guys are saying, and what i get from it is you dont use the crossover? how does this work? what are the pros and cons of going active?
Dont do it. In my opinion its not worth it unless you are doing SQ competitions. Half the time you will end up with a network so similar to the passive xovers its not worth it.

Advantages include being able to act like a badass and tell people there setups are no goodbecause they arnt active.

well i have never hooked up components so i dont even know how the crossovers work.
If you use the crossovers that came with your comp set---> Passive setup

If you use an electronic crossover (deck, active x-over...)--->Active Setup.

As a beginner just wire up the passive crossovers and enjoy

You're not going to know until you test with a meter. Typically even carpeting a box as opposed to painting is going to lose a few tenths.
