What does clipping sound like?

See, when my subs are just blasting away in the truck, I don't really hear any distortion, but when I put my ear real close to them I can hear something, it's not really distortion, maybe like a small "popping" noise or something. It doesn't sound dangerous or anything, but it doesn't sound right either. Is that just the mechanical noise or is something wrong?

And I'm going to hopefully have a multimeter Wednesday so I can set my amp/subs perfectly.

Oh, and all my equipment is in signature.

If you play higher frequencies, clipping becomes more and more obvious. It hard to tell on normal subwoofer requencies. Higher it's not so hard. It's like a buzzing noise, in a lot of ways it does sound mechanical.

"wah wah wah wah"

Hmm, it's definitely not a buzzing noise I'm hearing, it's more like a "pop" or a "scritch" or something. Hard to explain it, but I can only hear it if I get real close to the woofer. So if it's not clipping, what could it be?

P.S.

Err, I don't think I even _have_ a non MP3 CD. Is that bad...?

Um, how can I stop it? Just turn it down or what? It's loud enough where I can hear it about 1 foot away from the sub, but not loud enough that it overpowers the bass, if that makes sense.

And JimJ, I think 192kbps MP3s sound fine, TBH, I can hardly tell the difference in MP3s at 192+ and CDs (when my friends ride with me, they usually bring CDs along). Plus I'm a cheap *** mofo...

with mp3's burned i can't even turn my headunit up to it's undistorted max volume where i set my gain, if i do it clips, i have to keep it 5 volume notches down usually especially with rap mp3's, **** mp3's:furious:

They are sealed, and I don't think air is escaping from the screw holes. Hmm, I may start buying some of my music though. Could it be that the MP3 files themselves are distorting the bass and that's why it sounds funny? My dad's bringing home a multimeter tonight, so I'll be able to set my gains properly tomorrow.

And I have no trunk, they're behind my seat :p
