What do you think of a mileage based tax?

A House committee chairman said Tuesday that he wants Congress to enact a mileage-based tax on cars and trucks to pay for highway programs now rather than wait years to test the idea.
The tax would entail equipping vehicles with GPS technology to determine how many miles a car has been driven and whether on interstate highways or secondary roads. The devices would also calculate the amount of tax owed.
A mileage-based tax has been unpopular in some states where it has been proposed. Critics say it unfairly penalizes drivers who live in rural areas and intrudes on privacy.
Opinions? They are proposing this because tax revenues are falling along with gas use. I say they should deal with the lower income instead of increase taxes.

I don't like it. I don't want a government owned GPS in my vehicle, knowing every single place I go.

It would also favor vehicles with low MPG since they would be taxed at the same rate as a high MPG vehicle.

If the revenues go down, they should slow down on expanding the roads. If I make less money, I buy less stuff.

yeah, thats a not very thought out idea. Not to mention there are fucking odometers in EVERY CAR EVER. Couldn't they just read it once a year, if they wanted to actually implement such a tax?
