What decides going 2, 3, 4, 5 or 6 way on speakers?

I worked yesterday on my Daughter's car and have the head unit and front speakers all the way done. I did hook up the rear Pioneer 2-way Reference series 6x9's to hear them play but need some more hardware for the install. The fronts are 2-way Pioneer Reference series and are 6 1/2's. The fronts sound really good so far off the HU power from what I see so far. The rear 6x9's I don't know yet since I just played them FA and don't have them mounted. They move pretty good though! All of this got me thinking though that maybe I should have went to like a 3, 4, 5 or 6 way 6x9 in the rear. What is the point in those and is that the better way to go if you are trying to get bass from back there? These Reference series 6 1/2's 2-ways play good and the silk domes sound great. I think I did make the right choice there. The Sony head unit I put with these has SO MANY features of how you can move the soundstage, balance, fade, EQ, etc... that it is a ton harder to figure out than my Eclipse.

all you need is 2 or 3 way at most. the others are a marketting gimmick to adding tweeters in your car.

2 way=mid and tweeter

3 way=mid, midrange, tweeter

4 way=mid, midrange, tweeter, super tweeter

and so on

I had to lower mount even these 6x9's and they rub some on the rods in the trunk. Hopefully I can bend them a little so they don't hit and finish the install. Later I will probably add a 4 channel amp and a small sub. For now I just wanted to upgrade what was there without breaking MY pocketbook.

You can mount above and use those plastic things that crutchfield sells to space them. They look like junk, however. A better way is to use MDF or something.

They will sound much better with an amp.

The D3 400.4 (Diamond Audio 50wx4) is a good choice. That was my first multichannel amp.

I already have the holes drilled for mounting them underneath and they should be fine with a small tweak of thos rods. I always kind of thought anything more than a 2-way made no sense.

So you are saying amp all four and it will wake up pretty good huh? The 6.5's and 6x9's move pretty good from what I could see on the 52x4 power of the HU. I told her an amp will probably really wake them up though! I don't know how much it will increase the bass but it should a little.

The 52x4 rating on the head unit is a maximum power rating. It is likely only putting out around 15 watts per channel at full tilt, which is about average for an aftermarket head unit. Adding even a modest amp will give you a noticable increase in performance.

Wow, I almost want to buy a pair just to hear that 8-way sound. Interesting name, TNT. Anyway, stick with 2 way. Best bang for your buck.

52 watts is a max so about 26 is your RMS. That is going to be at full volume if even that much gets played. Drop some cash on an amp to power the speakers and they will sound much better.
