its the unit for measuring resistance, less ohms, less resistance, more power, more strain on equipment. most speakers in car audio are 4 ohm, while subs are usually wired between 1 ohm-4 ohm

In as simple of terms...its the measure of electrical resistance.

the amount of ohms a sub has indicates how many midgets are inside the motor structure pushing the subs up and down

4 ohms = 4 midgets

2 ohms = 2 midgets

@ 2 ohms u need less midgets because amps do more power at lower ohmages

thanks thats a pretty good site but im still confused on what the difference is between a lets say a 4 Ohm subwoofer and a 2 Ohm subwoofer

If that guy was joking about midgets and actually meaning little people than i feel really dumb i thought he was being serious.

Simplistically, it is easier for current to flow when the sub has 2 ohm coils vrs 4 ohm coils. What does that mean for you? Well look at some basic electrical equations... Voltage = Current * Resistance and Power = Voltage*Current. Do some algebra and you can see that your amplifier theoretically outputs twice the power when the resistance is cut in half. So you ask, why not reduce the resistance until it is very, very low and allows your amplifier to produce unholy amounts of power? Because at some point the components in your amplifier can no longer handle the power and burn up. Hope that helps you out a little.

people like to wire amplifiers ohm loads into lower impedances not just to get more power from the amp, but also to save money in a sense. an amp that does1500 watts at 4 ohm is going to be MUCH more expensive than an amp that does 1500 watts at 1 ohm.

ok. if u have a lower ohm woofer taking more energy from the amp is it possible to overwork the amp and if so would a higher amount of ohms would prevent it.

and having a lower ohm speaker isnt better or worse.
