My car's in the sig below. I've decided to build a false floor so I can get my amps out of the way of the fold down seats, and also have a more secure area for them instead of a piece of wood standing up. My issue mainly is the spare tire area. The floor in the trunk will "fold" back toward the cabin, allowing the user to pull the tire out. I am trying to decide if I want to place my amps on the side of the fold-back, or build some sort of hinged system that would allow me to fold back the top & bottom layer of the false floor, and easily access the spare tire. I haven't checked yet, but it might be possible for me to pull out the existing floor altogether, but I'm not sure. I don't want to take the spare out, btw.
My plan otherwise is to use 1/2" (even 1/4" if I can find it) MDF to make the bottom layer. I then plan to screw amps & distro blocks down into that, and guide wires through that layer. I would then use wood spacers to the height I need for each amp, and since I believe one is not as tall as the other, I would use some washers to help it sit a little higher, thus being flush with the other amp. From there I would like to use 1/2" MDF on the top layer, but should I really use 3/4" even though the heaviest thing I put back there is a small tool box? I would brace this thing VERY well to get by with 1/2", as I don't want my existing sub box not to fit (it's already about 3" from the top, so I might have an issue here if I can't get the current floor out). I would like to have plexi over the amps, but at this time I do not have access to a router, so are there any other options in making a flush fit with the plexi on the top layer of MDF? Also, I would also like to implement two small fans inside, hooked up through a relay to keep air circulating.
Can anyone offer me advice here? My ultimate goal is for a clean, but simple look. I'm trying to keep this as inexpensive as possible.
