Wanting a new computer

im in need of a new computer, i was customizing a dell xps 400 and just the tower(no monitor and speakers and all) was 1200$ but i have a 20% off cupon so it would be about 1000$ give or take

that includes pentium D, 1gb ram, 250gb hard drive, 256mb video, media center, tv tuner and remote, dvd drive and dvd burner drive, memory card reader and floppy(for school) and other random stuff

or build my own, ive got random prices on this any where from 800-1000+ dont know yet, but it would be in a cool case and pentium D 2.8ghz, 2gb DDR2 ram, 256mb video card with built in tv tuner PCI x16, 250gb HD, 2 Disk drives dont remember what else

only reason i dont really want to build one is i want xp media center and u cant buy it, and then i would have to install everything but i dont mind this just tedious, plus the dell would have good support and come with some programs on it like cd burning

but it would be cool to build one, i want to to glow because it will add madd deebeez to the computer syssem:naughty:

any help im not exactly sure on motherboards if you guys could suggest a good brand or which not, and some other things are

getting me but ive mostly narrowed it down

Unless you want a laptop i think your a retard for buying a premade and not building your own. Do a little reading, learn a thing or two, choose your parts, build a rig and overclock it...end up with a sweet system way better than a dell for way less $$..

Oh and the crap they load on a new dell is almost as bad as the support....so much bloatware shit its not funny.

Im not really sure if what your saying is true, that the new tech will only be availible from dell...but if it is i seriously doubt they will hold that edge for long. They arent that bad of comps...and if i was going to buy a premade it would be a dell...i just never would for anythign other than a laptop. i don't care, dell is awesome especially when they have the coupon for $750 off $1500. That's where i bought my desktop. 3.1ghz, 1gb ram, creative sound card, cd/dvd burner, Nvidia 6800, 17in flat panel for $700. can't beat that.

here is what im pricing on

case: 100 can get a nice case for 100,

mb: 75 id go with 100 for that, dont slack on the main component

cpu:250 250 can get ya a athlon 64 3700+

video:150 66ooGT for that

ram: 60 spend a tad more and get a good stick of 1 gig

HD:100 100 can get ya a seagate 250 gig

drives: 200 2 of them

all in all that would be a pretty decent computer

It still uses a dell bios where the most important settings are locked out. And when your looking at their highest desktops i bet you could still build that exact same system for cheaper. Now their lower end desktops sometimes with all the deals are pretty hard to beat price wise...but making your own would be a nicer machine for the little bit extra it cost. just my 2 cents. oh forgot to mention 200gb HD and the video card is 256mb pci express. you can build a better one for less than $700? go ahead do it. mind you i bought this system about 8 months ago and i'm sure my vid card is cheaper now. my vid card alone back then was about $350 and that was ebay also before the nvidia came out with the 7800.

i don't really care if you hate dell, you have a right to an opinion.

but all in all, of course its better to build one. you learn and its fun and you get the stuff you want.
