You just sign into the Playstation Network and it will download the latest update or rent the latest game released on PS3. You also will want to back up your saved game's or anything else you have stored on the PS3 as swapping the drive will result in you losing it.

About downloading game's for the PS3 it can't be done just yet. The only way I know of is if you are able to find a developer console which sell for like $1000+ and there hasn't and probably won't be a ISO loader for PS3 for a LONG time. On the other hand the PS3 can play burnt PS1 game's by opening it up and using the swap switch but that can damage the drive and it will also play PS2 game's through Swap Magic and a USB loader but since the PS3 is only USB1 they are extremely slow and laggy.

If you want a console where you don't have to buy game's I would suggest a 360. Very easy to flash and the game's are all over the place. They are working on some things with the PS3 but from what was said on the lan dev channel's they aren't going to release any info or anything due to the rapid rate sony is firing out updates and they want to make sure they don't find a way to patch anything. But sadly enough all the great mind's who hacked the PSP aren't even looking at the PS3 due to unknown reason's some even say they were paid $100,000 a piece by sony to not develop anything for it but that's just rumors.
