Here are pics with the Alpine trim frame (please ignore the dust). Looks okay, imo, but there are gaps on the right and left sides, and it is just slightly recessed to the point of not being flush with the back of the bezel.
Since I'd already bought the plastic, I decided to go ahead and make a better trim frame, and just glued it to the Alpine piece. When I snapped the new coupled piece back on, it filled the gaps on the sides and also sat out just far enough that the bezel presses right up against it. I also kinda like the textured finish vs the glossy trim from Alpine. It really takes focus off the trim and makes the unit itself look like it's pressed snugly into the dash.
