why do high spl subwoofers typically have low sensitivity numbers and sq sub have typically high sensitivity numbers. It seems it would be the other way around but then again i know nothin about subwoofer design

From a general standpoint, a driver geared towards high output levels will often have a larger coil, stiffer suspension, and a heavier cone, because they are meant to take high wattage and not break a sweat, but all these bigger parts lead to a higher MMS (moving mass) thus, the driver will be inefficient at turning wattage into sound.
