When a company says they have a "4 layer voice coil" for a dual coil sub, do they mean 4 layers per coil or 4 layers total, which is only 2 layers per coil?
Yes. At the end of the day, your thermal power handling will have more to do with the volume of metal in the coil.... though 8 layer coils are typically a lot bigger than 4.... of course the tradeoff on 8 layer and 4" coils is the larger gap needed and more mass. Since the strength of a magnetic field is an inverse squared to the distance tighter gaps give a big edge on motor force.
