I recently installed a system in my truck.
DEH-80PRS
Polk PA-D4000.4
Pioneer TS-D1602R
Pioneer TS-SXW2502 10" sub
I have a set of JBL P660's on the way (and a tweeter amp/distro block/speaker wire for 3way active), but this problem isnt really related.
I set my gains with a DMM using a 50hz (sub) and 1khz test tone (fronts). The amp is rated for 125wrms @ 4 ohms, and I currently have 60wrms at the fronts. This is with the 80PRS at 55 on the volume control. I would think that this would mean my gains arent set too high.
It sounds fantastic and I have no loud hissing or alternator whine. I do however have very slight noise/snowstorm/static at both speakers even when the headunit is playing digital silence or paused. I cant hear it sitting in the seat- I have to put my ears next to the speaker to hear it. It is not the head unit or RCA cables- I have (with the power off) disconnected the RCA cables and the noise is the same when the amp turns on.
I want to stress its pretty faint. It doesnt really bother me in that even with the music at a whisper theres no way I could hear the noise. However, this is a new amp and its running at only half its rated wattage- is this normal? Im fine if a very faint amount of noise is normal, but then im throwing in some very sensitive speakers (the JBLs woofers- the tweets will be on a separate amp) and throwing more wattage at them- do I have an amp problem?
Truck is a 2002 Ford Ranger Extended Cab 4cyl. My amp is grounded where my passenger seatbelt connects to the cab (big clean bolt- I modified the ground terminal slightly to accept the larger bolt so I could be sure I had a good ground). The only other ground location I see is the bolts for the passenger jump seat, and that seems nowhere near as good as where it is now.
Any thoughts? I get no other issues commonly associated with bad grounds- the amp doesnt seem to clip or distort, no volume fade when the bass hits, no other noises, no going into protection, no nothing.
I just need some guys in the know to give me advice- im pretty new to all this.
