very hot amp

I have an audiobank amp running two 1000w JBL 12" subs they are bridged as it is a 4ch amp, thing is the amp gets very hot, too hot to touch for longer than 2/3 seconds. I can also smell it, not a burning smell at all but a hot metal smell i dont know if that is good or not as in theory maybe it is drawing the heat away from the components inside but on the other side it might be getting too hot.

I was thinking about making something whereby i buy some small pc fans and set them up to blow air over the amp i need to know if that is really needed or not? And where could i power the fans from, could i power them from the interior boot light?

thanks

go to Walmart and get a house Box fan and a cheap DC to AC inverter so you can power it...then duct tape the amp to the fan after you hook the fan up...The fan can double as an amp rack //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif it'll help the amp run cooler...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif the fans are cheap less tham $20.00 you'll probaally want to run it on number 3 in the trunk...or number 2 if its where you can hear it so you don't hear it as easily...It just takes a little rigging but you can remote mount the fan switch to your dash somewhere to control the fan speed...//content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

Thanks alex thats a very descriptive and informative post but actually has no relevance to my question.
thanks
niiice sick burn

someone said it it maybe that the ohm load that you have you sub at maybe to low for the amp thus causing extreme heat

I posted a link for the amp and subs above which you can see but i found the ohm rating for subs which is Specs: Amplification type: Passive; Input Impedance: 4 Ohm; Sensitivity: 93 dB. from that could you tell if the amp and subs are matched

Subs can't be bridged. //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

They can, however, be wired into a parallel or a series. How did you connect the subs?

Are all four the channels bridgeable? Most 4 channel amps are only bridgeable on 2 channels to make one.

sorry i mean they are bridged on the amp, the amp has 4 channels and the one sub bridges two channels and the other sub bridges the other two channels. is that what you meant?

bridge the first two channels to one sub = 4 ohm

Ch. 1 + / Ch. 2 -

bridge channels 3 and 4 to the other sub = 4 ohm

Ch. 3 + / Ch. 4 -

almost all 4 channels can handle that, unless something else is wrong with the amp.
