Using an active EQ/crossover make a difference?

If I were to spend say $200-300 on an active crossover and 5-7 band EQ or a crossover/eq combo, would it be worth it in helping to even out my peaky freq response? Is this a night/day difference sort of thing or just something for seroius audiophiles? Are there good brands that I could find for much cheaper on Ebay? Between a peak at 30hz for a ported box, 45hz bass boost, passive crossover on my infinity ref comp's, and the crossing over of some frequencies between my comp's and subs due to amp settings, some songs with a very wide harmonic range are very interesting to listen to, to say the least. Thanks.

if you can, i suggest you demo a crossover of high configurability.

basically it involves putting a computer next to your car...

you hook up the PC or laptop's sound output to the amp's RCA inputs.

you then use winamp + eq plugins (windows) or aRts (linux) and play music. BTW baudline is a great linux app for sound, but is specifically not bundeled with any distro.

now you can play with the EQ all you like and try to find what you need in an EQ.

A parametric EQ and some sorta Meter to measure you're responses, and that should do, maybe a 5-7 Band Per Channel, or per pair of channels i guess, hehe, depends how many peaks u got.... some HUs got em built in, but its more upgradable if its seperate i guess //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif
