Using A Relay

so from the green wire, i can power 2 amps, eqx, and 2 fans, just run them parallel?

so i would solder/crimp 5 wires together and connect to my remote on my 2 amps and eqx, and use as power for my fan. Ground fans with amp ground or find another.

the green wire from the relay, i would solder/crimp to the 5 wires correct?

the relay isnt constant 12v correct, remote only.

lastly, how do u fuse the relay. i can find a 12v source, but how would i fuse that? do they sell inline fuses for these?

yes that is all correct... you should be able to run those 5 things from the relay... if not... run another relay :-D... but yes it is only going to power the other things with the head unit on... as the input is from the remote wire... whenever the remote wire doesn't give the relay 12 volts... the contacts go between 87a **nothing** and 30 **output**... so it is giving nothing to your amps and stuff... but when you activate the relay with the 12 volts from the remote wire... the contacts move and you have power!!!... how do you fuse the relay? run a wire from a 12 volt constant source... such as your power wire for your amps... distribution block... or ignition harness... and put a female spade connector on it... and then run another wire to the relay 12 volt constant input **87**... and then put a female spade connector on it... and then connect both spades on to the male prongs of the fuse... and there you have ur own inline fuse... or just go buy a 10 gauge inline fuse holder... that is a ring of power wire that you cut and has the lil rubber fuse holder in the middle... and crimp/solder it to the power wire for your relay...

this looks helpful

*the important information is hilighted in bold type (by me ^_^)

i might try that- it look just like what you are talking about.

ok i bought the relay today from radio shack.

now, whats that thing between the black and green wire. do i need that?

the silver thing? it should just be a screw or somthing holding it together. hook up all the wires and see if it works, just like that diagram... tell me if it does work =)

Regarding the fuse...

i bought 2 things..inline fuse holder .. specs

5x20 mm fuses rated at 5A at 250 VAC

And

3 Amp auto fuse with spade connectors

which setup to go with?

Here's a *very* crude diagram of what i hooked up.

the relay does not have a cap in it. rather it takes the signal from the HU and switches on the 12v from the battery. the wire from the battery is 10g and it's fused with an inline blade fuse like this:

http://www.radioshack.com/product.asp?catalog%5Fname=CTLG&product%5Fid=270-1234

The small distro block is, once again prob overkill, but it lets me fuse all my stuff separately . i used something kinda like this:

http://www.partsexpress.com/pe/showdetl.cfm?&DID=7&Partnumber=263-510

To make the connections to the relay to turn accessories on with the HU use this setup:

Terminal 87...to Battery (12v)

Terminal 30...to accessories

Terminal 86....to ground

Terminal 85....to HU

Terminal 87A...not used

I used female spades to make the connections

bad drawing link not working. refer to http://www.bcae1.com "relays" section. the diagram near the end of the page entitled "wire and fuse calculator" will show the proper connections to the relay

fuse holder is prob too small for the 12v. i'd prob use 10ga wire w/ maybe a 7.5a fuse. again overkill-but i haven't burned up my car yet. refer to the "wire and fuse calculator"

is it ok to connect a larger ga. wire to a smaller?

so from my 12 V, i would use spade connector to that end and from the relay, spade on that end and 7.5a fuse inbetween?

no fuse holder. correct?

I believe-and anyone correct me if i'm wrong-you can run a smaller wire off of a bigger wire if and only if you fuse the smaller wire and the smaller wire is sufficient to handle the load you plan to place on it. I'd use a blade style fuse holder off of your 12v if directly from the battery or use an opening in your distro block for your amps-either way-ya need some kind of a fuse holder.

actually.... the smaller wire is carring the 12v source.. i want to connect a larger wire to it..

in my trunk.. i have a stock amp which powers all 10 speakers in my car. In that harness there is a 12v source already. All speakers wires, remote, ground, and others are in that harness.

do i still have to fuse that wire? shouldnt this wire already be fused? if not, no big deal.
