Hi,
I'm new to this forum but not necessarily to Alpine changers... That said, I'm kinda stumped so I thought I would seek the wisdom here. I have searched high and low and haven't found anything so here goes.
Car is a 1992 Volvo 940Turbo with the stock CR-814 HU.
I've been running an Alpine 5960 changer (M-Bus) since 1995. I did need to use a DIN adapter to convert the Volvo mini-DIN to Alpine's full-size DIN plug. (I built this myself. And yes, I have tapped in a continous 12V source to this.)
I found yesterday out that Alpine's current CHA-S634 can play MP3. More importantly, the 634 is apparently also a dual-protocol changer that can be used with M-bus HU with the KCA-130B cable adapter.
So I bought the two today.
Here's what I did to install it:
1. Unlock the changer
2. Set the damper for vertical mounting (since I mounted this in my glovebox)
3. Flipped the dip switch to position 2 to choose M-bus
4. Plugged in the KCA-130B, being careful to align the arrows
5. Plugged in the CHA-S634, again being careful to align the arrows
Everything looked and operated fine:
1. The changer powers up correctly.
2. The changer loads and ejects the cartridge properly
However, it doesn't play!
Here's what happens:
1. I insert the CD cartridge
2. I switch the HU to CD input
3. The HU's display lights up disc 1, track 1
4. However, I can't hear the changer doing anything
5. The HU indicates an error of "EEE"
6. From this point on, the HU's CD input is stuck on "EEE" until I power down
I also tried switching disc right after switching to the CD input but the changer doesn't respond.
I switch back to my 5960 and everything works.
Any tips or hints? Does the S634 draw more power than the 5960? Are there different version of M-bus?
