Area of a circle...pi*radius^2

Yes, the actual Sd will be a little less, but it'll get you in the ballpark...

but wouldnt it be a bit more? taking in acount the curvature of the cone and i was always lead to believe that part of the surround was added

Typically around 480 cm^2 for 12's.

Edit:

Looked on a few Manuf. sites...came up w/ 82-85sq inches on average.

480 (common cones like RE, Fi, etc) is ~74sq inches.

The way each manuf. measure may be different though.
