Tweeters that wont make me go deaf

Not that this isnt a known problem, but the tweeters that came with my Boston Pro60's are just killing me. Right now i cant hear too well out of my left ear and its really annoying me. I really hope it comes back....And i cant stop listening cause it still sounds so **** good (I dont listen that loudly either)

Anyway, I ordered some audio-quality resistors to attenuate the tweeters a bit more, but I guess I'm still on the lookout for something else. I dont know if the fact they are aluminum actually makes them louder (in which case turning them down more will be 100% effective) or actually the tone the metal creates that is the problem (if thats the case, turning them down to low may make them too quiet and take away from the music).

Anyway, if I could have some suggestions for tweeters that sound just as good as the ones that came with the Pro60s (one thing I can say is they offer an incredible level of detail) but wont hurt...

Also, my hearing should come back right? I dont have any ringing or anything.

btw, as far as price id like to keep it under $100 or so but if I would be losing quality over the bostons I would pay more.

What "hurts" about them? Is it possible just a tuning issue, where they are a little harsh? Maybe a good quality EQ would be a better "fix" to your problem? Or are you simply listening to them too loudly?

If your just listening to them too loudly, the solution is easy....turn the stereo down //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif If they are probably balanced with the mid, then decreasing just the tweeter's output is going to do more harm than good, in terms of sound quality.

I did. They are set at -4db. And its not completely a volume issue. I used to listen to my SL60's at much louder volumes and never lost hearing from it. My car also isnt the best setup, the tweeters are right on the pillars maybe 18" (or less) away from me and the speakers are down near my shins almost under the dashboard.

Yeah I was looking at CDT Silk tweeters actually. I just dont want to lose any accuracy over the ones I have now, but I know CDT makes great speakers so maybe I'll give that a try.

Looks like it's time to grab and EQ and start battling the frequency response. That is likely where most of your issues are stemming from.

I'm planning on getting an alpine 9835 sometime in the near future, so that will give me a full EQ. I just have the treble center control right now.

I cant really put the tweeters futher down. First I really dont want the soundstage coming from the floor of the car and second there just really is nowhere I could put them.

I dont hear any white noise coming from them. Also, does anyone know the actual impedance of them? On boston's website it lists them as 8ohm, but with a multimeter is shows 6ohm. I've heard good things about the LPG silk domes, which is also rated at 8ohm. Is that an option?

Also, a little off the subject, but what is the jumper switch in the Pro60 crossovers that is switches between coaxial and component mode do? It doesnt seem to do anything.

Also, do give an idea on how loud I am running them speakers, People say the Pro60's need alot of power, I'm using a volume setting that would produce maybe 100w with a 1khz test tone. Apparently people run 300w to these speakers and actually use that 300w...I dont know how that is standable.

Resistance is not the same as impedance. Your meter measures resistance which will usually not be the same as rated impedance on any speaker. Perhaps the new Alpine will help to get the response you are seeking. Not sure on the jumper, give Boston a call, They are usually great to talk with on the tech side.

Hearing loss is cumulative and does not get better with time. Experts from a hearing protection company just gave this piece of info. at work. Get yourself checked out to prevent further damage.

Ive been reading and there is a temporary threshold shift that does come back within 24-48 hours. So I am laying off anything loud for the next few days and hopefully it will come back. I really hope it does... But otherwise people would be completely deaf after 2 rock concerts. I've been to concerts and I can say they are much louder than my car stereo.

If you want to turn it up, get some fitted tripple flange ear plugs. I used to use a pair when I "tuned" my system with the volume up before I learned about voltage and DMMs and what-not. They're also really helpfull when your dropping 81 mm mortars. That is by far the loudest sound I've ever heard.

You can wear one in your left ear as a temp solution until you make the change in your system... (If you have to listen to it loud).

Either way, lay of the tunes (and other loud noises) for a few days and then go get an audiogram. If you've ever had one before, compare them and look for a significant threshhold shift in the mid frequencies...

Rainbow silk tweeters .... The kind that come with the Profi component set = The best I have EVER heard. Detail abounds , and accuracy is perfect , but they NEVER get hard to listen to , at ANY volume level .....
