tweeter pop/cracking noise

I'm geussing its from distortion but whenever I tuurn my Rainbow SLC a little too high the tweets make the most horrindus poppping scratching cracking noise. Would this noise have anything to do with the protective circitry in the crossovers? They sound amazing until I tuurn them up a little too much. My gain is only 1/2 up and my amp is supposed to put out 110x2 @4ohm. Shouldnt these speakers be able to handle this much power? When I turn my gain all the way up it doe basically the same thing. Not saying they dont get loud but I would not have expected them to make that noise at that volume. So what is the noise exactly and is my gain not turned up enough or is it too high?

thats your problem (the bolded).... dude when you hear that noise you are supposed to turn the gains DOWN not up...you are going to kill your speakers man.

HAHA yea sorry about that I worded that wrong. I didnt mean I leave it cranked I was mainly wondering if that noise is distortion. I was just thinking if the speakers are rated for 110 rms and my amp does that I thought 1/2 gain wouldnt be enough but it must be too much. Just a little puzzled that the gain is so low. Any good ways for setting the gains for a set of comp?

Figure out what number on your HU you'd like to be the max. I usually use about 3/4 of the way up, just to stop my pre-amp from clipping. (25 on alpines). Turn your speakers up to 25 volume with the gains all the way down, play something midbass heavy, maybe even test tones at 1k or so. Turn the speakers up until you hear signs of stress or until it's louder than you'd ever need it to be. If you hit the point where it's too loud, then stop, if you don't but start to hear distortion (vocal's will begin to sound weird) Then back your gains back until it sounds normal, then go just a bit further back to be safe. That's the cheap and common sense way to set gains.

The gain does not make less or more power. It is there so you can adapt the amp to the HUs prevolt. You can crank it up, but its only going to make 110, or less depending on the quality of the amp, watts of clean, unclipped power regardless. Turn the gain down some and set it correctly either by ear or DMM if available. You dont want crackling AT ALL.

So how would I use a DMM to firgure out where to set the gain since its not even half way up yet. I doubt my amp is clipping at this point. Is the noise that I described tweeter distortion or somthing else?

Or is the noise the tweets not ditorting but reaching their mechanical limit because they sound amazing and then you hit one volume notch too much and....well you know the rest
