Turning the subsonic filter up!

Hey gang!

This is my first experience with a box that i actually bought knowing what tuning frequencies, sizes meant exactly, etc. etc. But anyways, i'm running 2 alpine type-x 12's in 2.0cf each tuned to 30hz. Right now i have my subsonic filter tuned to ~25hz.

My last box was a sealed 1.0cf box with a rockford p3 10" in it, and one of my favorite songs to listen to was 'intergalactic' by the beasties, and i've noticed that with my 30hz box that song, and also 'award tour' by tribe called quest sound really really sloppy because the basslines are semi-fast and right around 30hz.

I was wondering if turning my subsonic up, closer to tuning could tighten up the slop around tuning, or if this is just something i have to get used to?

My only other ported box i've owned was a 45hz box with a 15" l7 in it, and that was sloppy on almost ALL music without slooooow steady bass lines, line old school dr dre, etc. But i expected a lot more accuracy with a 30hz box, and these two songs are making me mental!!!!!

Anyone know if there's a setting i can tweak to correct this, or are the basslines just too fast and low for my box?

Thanks!

Also, right now i have my bass boost which i believe is centered at 45hz turned to 0db, could i raise this up a bit, and reset my gains to accentuate the higher frequencies in the music that aren't noticeable?

Thank you!

Well, i found out why my subs were so boomy and unclean.

I got my o-scope in the mail today, and found out the installers had my bass boost cranked so high on the hifonics that even with the gain turned ALL THE WAY DOWN the signal was still a complete square wave......

I turned the bass boost all the way down, and set my gains CORRECTLY with a 45hz 0db sine, and my subs aren't nearly as loud anymore, but the SQ and accuracy are the best i've ever heard!!!

In fact, on my test-drive, i had to turn the subwoofer output off a few times just to see if the bass was actually coming from the subwoofers and not the door speakers, because the soundstage and accuracy were sooooo accurate. I'm falling in love with these x's all over again //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif

Don't think you suppose to turn the SSF below your port tuning. It damages the sub and has no audible output.

LOL, its saposta be set 10hz below tuning, so in his case at 20Hz. basicly it limits the signal to the speaker to prevent over excuting below tuning. its a realy realy low high pass filter.

SSF is a high pass filter ment to keep the sub from destrying itsself below tuning. it has no effect on the tightness of the bass. Type X's like it sealed ive heard. Try that.

My ava 18 plays Intergalactic nicely. plays slow and low nicely too, i love the beasties though their good songs are from my brothers time and not mine. Probably why i like them anyway.

Thanks everybody for the, well, comments. I realize what a subsonic filter is for, i realize it's safe to keep it below tune, and i realize it has nothing to do with the tightness of the bass.

The only thing i was trying to find out is whether or not increasing the subsonic filter to or slightly above the tuning frequency temporarily could improve bass response obviously not AT but just above tuning frequency, as the transient response at this afformentioned tuned frequency is lacking.

Also ^^^ About 5 posts up, i called off the witch hunt, since i tracked the problem down to extensive clipping, due to hifonics low quality bass boost circuit, and incompetant installers tuning my gain WAY too high. Not only that, my 4-channel amp was cranked way over clipping as well, and i think my type-r's in the back doors are blown. So much for having my gear proffessionally installed to prevent complications.

Answer would have been a negative. You would only be sacrificing output and loosing your low end frequencies. Which is the sole purpose of a sub //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/wink.gif.608e3ea05f1a9f98611af0861652f8fb.gif

I'm a noob to car audio, but to my limited knowledge....you are supposed to set your SSF at 70% of what your box is tuned for.

i.e. if your box is tuned to 32 hz, ud set the SSF to 24 hz
