I kept thinking I knew what I was doing, but I'm getting frustrated with spending hours in the car listening to different things and twisting knobs. I'm trying to narrow down everything to get the best sound possible I can with what I got.
Here's my equipment.
Boss REV-335 2-ch amp
12" Polk db subwoofer 8 ohm (old, made in the mid-90's)
JVC Digifine KD-SH55 head unit
Stock components (6.5" + tweeter 30w max)
Stock rear deck speakers (6.5" 30w max)
EQ options on the deck itself are the following, what I have set is in parenthesis:
Low Freq: 50hz, 80hz, 120hz (80hz)
Low Width: 1-4 (4)
Low Level: +/- 6 (+3)
Mid Freq: 700hz, 1khz, 2khz (700hz)
Mid Width: 1-2 (1)
Mid Level: +/- 6 (+1)
High Freq: 8khz, 12khz (8khz)
High Level: +/- 6 (+3
S.(Super) Bass: 1-8 (+3)
Ext Out (where my subwoofer is hooked up): 1-12 (+5)
I got curious about adjusting the sub on the EQ set to flat. I've read that I should turn off the bass boost off my amp. That I did. However, I had to crank the gain on the amp a lot more as well as the "ext out" on my head unit. The punch from the sub was cleaner, but it was also subtle. It didn't hit as hard. So, I was beginning to think the amp is severely underpowered for the 8 ohm subwoofer and I've been running a very bad combination of amp + sub. I was afraid I'd find myself flipping that bass boost switch just to get more oomph because the amp's gain without it just isn't enough.
Is there anything I can do about the subwoofer settings? Are the settings on my head unit too much for stock speakers? Any advice? Thanks!
