Tuning mono amp trouble

So I have a q1-1200 that I am trying to set the gains on with my multimeter. I have a 60hz test tone to do so and I understand how to do it, but the problem is whenever I start to turn my head unit up my speakers start distorting really bad and I know this cant be good for them. I want to set my gains right but I don't want to blow my speakers. What should I do? Can I tune them with anything besides test tones because my door speakers distort when it's just straight bass at higher volumes.

before you tune, make sure everything is set to flat or 0 on the headunit. (Bass, Treble, Loudness, whatever)

then turn the volume to the max volume that you like to listen to. And tune from there

I'd personally use a 40hz test tone tho
