Tuning help; why am I blowing 6x9s?

Hi guys,

I'm new to the site.. kind of a noob I guess but I installed my own system and picked it all out. I have a couple questions...

My system is:

Pioneer Headunit (6300? Its about 4 yrs old with the Dolphins)

2 Infinity Kappa Perfect 12s, don't remember if SVC or DVC

2 Infinity Kappa 5 1/4s up front

2 Infinity Kappa 6x9s in back

JBL GTO Series 700W amp for the subs

MTX 4channel amp for the speakers. I think its 40W per channel

#1: I have blown 2-3 speakers in the last 3-4 years. I blew one 6x9 and two of the ones up front. I mean I think they are blown, they still play sound but it just doesn't sound normal like they should. Is this normal for this to happen? I like the music loud, I listen to rap, rock, r&b, pretty much everything. I don't think I'm even close to overpowering them. Each speaker is only getting like 40W from the amp. Do I need to install bass blockers or something? I have no idea..

#2: How do I tune my system, as far as on the headunit AND on the amps?

#3: There is a separate subwoofer control on the HU, but I don't know how/if I should take advantage of it. There are 2 sets of inputs on the back. I think one is going to each amp. For the set of RCAs running to the 4-channel amp, I put Y-cables on them for both sets of speakers. SO usually I fade it to the rear like -6 for the bass to sound normal.

As you can see I need a lot of help. So a big thank you to whoever takes the time to answer my questions! //content.invisioncic.com/y282845/emoticons/smile.gif.1ebc41e1811405b213edfc4622c41e27.gif If you need to know anything else I can run out to the car and get that info no problem.

by the way you explained it you have the speakers hooked up to both the amp and the HU at the same time. if that is so that is completely wrong
I don't get that impression.

I think you are pushing the 6x9's to limits beyond what thye can handle. You should cross them over hp at 80hz, maybe 60 with a steep slope if you can.

I think you might be clipping your amp.

So how are your amps hooked up to the head unit? One set or RCAs split to the 4 channel and another set of RCAs to the sub amp? I think that's what you explained.

Does that MTX amp have a high pass filter on it? Or does your HU have any crossovers? You should be high passing all of your speakers at about 80 hz. If you give them too much bass at higher volumes they will bottom out. Or you might be trying to drive your amp too hard, sending it into clipping. Taking bass out of the signal will let your amp do more.
