depends on the sub, the volume of the box in question, the vehice...

for a very general perspective..

higher tunings cause big peaks 2-10hz above the tuning frequency

lower tunings cause flatter response from the sub

I am talking about the dd 3512...

i dont kno how it came to be, but my box is 5 cu/\ft, with 75 sq in of port, its tuned to 45 hz for 2 3512...i called dd to find out info but i got some guy who said he was new and he couldn't help me at all...

so i go on the website, and look at wut they have, and i remember reading here that the more port area the better, so i looked at wut they had and i saw the 75 sq in port so did that...

so i go on here and ask about it, and was told to tune lower, this and that...

ok, so now i wanna learn more about tuning so that i dont make the same mistake another time....

here's the deal...tuning is not based on port volume, but rather an aspect ratio. the bigger the port area, the longer the port has to be to keep the tuning frequency the same. also, the larger the box, the shorter the port length will be for a given tuning frequency.
