trying to learn about subs and amps before i actually buy any. help plz

well im most likely doing the work myself but i could spend around 200-300
if your only looking to spend this much you better look at used ,cause if you buy new your prolly gonna get junk .1st question you ask is [subs] what is the rms ratings and ask to see the manual,if no manual look at different subs if new , also you need to know if the subs are dual voice coils or single because that will determine what amp you need.if you get dual 4 ohm subs then you can either get a mono block 1 ohm stable [which i recommend]or a 2 channel amp and wire the 2 woofers at 4 ohms .same question with the amp look for rms rating, you wanna match the rms rating of the subs and amps the same .dont look at sony amps or subs ,same with pyle ,power acoustic, performance teknique, boss, and any other stuff you might see in the flee market.kicker is great for a starter set up so is some of the fosgate stuff, you just have to look around a bit.

rms is continuous power that the woofers can take and the amp can produce. it depends on your vehicle space ,i like 12s myself ,but the bigger the woofer the deeper the bass and also the bigger the box

ok another question of mine is what exactly does rms stand for and what does it measure?
It means root mean squared. mylows broke it down in his first sentence.

and what size would be best if i listen to all genres of music?
Depends on how much room you have. I have a friend who loves 10s....I love 15s. You can also sound just as good with an 18 or even an 8.

Hmmm....Bigger the box? Most of the time, yes. Deeper the bass, no. Depends on how a sub is made, box, install, everything. I've heard a 10 that got lower and louder than a 15 before.

so the best to start out with are kicker or fosgate? and whats a good rms then?
I would look into 600 rms or less for a starter system. Are you trying to go more on the loud side (spl) or sounding good with tight, quick bass (Sq).

And what kind of car will this go into to?
