trouble shooting

My amp has recently been going into protection at medium volume and then it would continuously go into protection with very low volume(barely audible).

What should i do to test to see if the amp is messed up or something with the electrical system(12 year old car and the wiring looks corroded) Im getting a volt meter tomorrow. Where should i be testing and what numbers should i be looking for? The amp is rated for 600 watts rms.

if you see corroded wires, re-terminate them. you want to look for a short in the speaker wiring. that means disconnecting the speaker wires from the amp and measuring resistance on them. what resistance you see should be just below the combined impedance of the connected speakers/subs.

loose or corroded ground connections will cause problems as well. inspect and redo that connection to ensure clean contact to bare metal.

I couldnt get a multimeter today. will try tomorrow

I got the battery tested at advanced auto parts and it was good(test showed 13.17v, 426cca, 113 F degrees)

I cleaned my amp's ground. The problem still remains.

Also every once and awhile my car wont start(happened today and seems to happen more often after it rains). The door lights work but if i try to start the car all the lights go out and nothing happens(no clicking like when the battery is dead) I cleaned the battery terminals and then the car started. After that i went to get the battery checked. Everything was fine but after i went shopping the car wouldnt start again. I messed with the battery terminals and then it started.

Not sure what to do next. Should i get the alt checked or should i do the "big 3" or what?

Back to the corrosion thing with the no start issue. Check connections at the starter also.
