This is an obvious attempt to divert strong attention to the persona as a viable entity.

He wants you to look as the persona as your psychological equal. If this persona is your equal, it makes you more likely to engage the persona in what you view as a meaningful conversation.

He simply views the conversation as a successful diversion from his own personally held thought processes.

It's almost as if he has split personalities, except he is somewhat aware of his alternate personality here, yet may be unaware of its purpose.

I am endangering the veil he covers himself with, and he realizes this.

He thus attempts to, once again, engage my conversation and attention down to an equal with the persona.

If he can successfully do this, he makes the persona again appear to be more of a believable personality.

If I argue with him as an equal, his persona looks like his real personality. It would appear that i am having a conversation with another person, while in reality it is simply an invented persona designed to distract from his underlying personality.

Basically, his true self understands what I am saying perfectly.

His persona is fighting for a method of maintaining the illusion.
