trojan horse

I was online and an alert showed up on my pc from AVG anti-virus that a virus was detected. I ran AVG and 1 virus was detected it said it was a trojan. I then attempted to remove it and it said it was unable to. Then I downloaded a 15 day free trial for symantec. Symantec didn't find any viruses and then I ran AVG again and it didn't find any viruses. How reliable or trustable is Symantec? Do you think it would have found the trojan if it was on my PC?

Norton AV is GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Maybe AVG gave me a false alarm. I ran AVG and Symantec twice and neither is finding a virus now. Do me a favor go to "my computer" then double click on C drive. Then double click on documents and settings. Then double click on cookies. Then double click on your personal folder (the folder with your name). Then double click on cookies. Then highlight everything in this folder and see if you can delete all objects in there.

I'm unable to remove an Index file from in there. When I double click to open it I get a message that says "you are attempting to open a file type (.Dat)

These files are used by operating system and by various programs. Editing or modifying them could damage your system.

I'm wondering if this is possibly a virus or if it's a system folder.

Try running the AV in safe mode. Or find the registry settings it adds and delete them.
you know everything because thats how you fix it lol. I had a virus that was just a bunch of cd cracks and they multiply on their own and when you try to open them. I just ran it in safe move and norton deleted it.

i had a trojan on my computer and it kept screwing it up and making it slower, so finally we took the original disc and re did the whole comptuer and started from scratch again, those trojan viruses ****, good luck in getting rid of it, i coundt get rid of the **** thing......

Norton is HORRIBLE. It doesn't detect viruses when I get them but go to http://www.google.com and type in free online virus scan. Then it's called microtrends. That works well. Also when you find out what virus you have, if the program doesn't remove it automatically do a search for some forums. They usually have the cure.

Seriously, I guarantee that if the program couldn't delete it, it's because it's running in the background ...
Hit Ctrl+Alt+Del and list what is running ... What OS are you running ?

http://www.kaspersky.com/scanforvirus.html (Has detected dozens of viruses on my parents' computer that NAV has missed)

I did control alt delete and there were no applications running if that what you wanted me to check. I'm running XP. I'll try that link that you posted and see if it finds anything.

How do I run Symantec in Safe Mode? I don't know how to do this never done it.
Boot up in Safe Mode and then run the program. Depending on your OS, you will either hit F2 when your computer loads up to enter setup and get into safe mode, or you'll hit F8. The startup screen should tell you.
