Tricky alt whine problem

A search turned up 10 posts on the subject? I have developed a alt whine problem and I need some help to diagnose where its coming from. Ive tried grounding my amp to the batt, regrounding the HU (alpine) and its still there. I unplugged the rca and its still there, even if I turn the hu off, its still there! I read somewhere that a shorted speaker wire could be causing a ground loop? How can I test for it? If I remove 1 speaker wire from the amp at a time will it go away when I find the right one? I would bring it to a local shop, but since I installed everything myself, most dont seem interested in dooing it. One shop said they would have to reinstall everything. I spent alot of time and hid the wires under the carpet and under the rear seats and it was a pain in the ***, I dont want to have to tear it all apart again. Please help if you can. Thanks, Chuck

Search for "mute plugs" here. Use those in each RCA of your amps, & headunit. That will help you figure out the noise culprit.

Also, if your gains are set too high you could be inducing noise into your system that way.

So a muting plug is a male rca plugged in to the amp channel and the other male end you solder the center pin to the outside shield? Sounds like it would screw up the amp or hu.
