tricks for retrieving bolt from engine compartment?

If you can't locate it, it's going to be hard to retrieve it. If it's visible, I'd recommend an extendable magnet retriever that you can get at most auto parts or hardware stores.

i tried backing out of the driveway and back in to see if it would fall out but i don't think it did. I can't see it either so i don't know what happened.

Yes i've looked with a flashlight and couldn't see it. The magnet string just kindof stuck to everything and i couldn't really get it down where i wanted it to go. I sprayed a little bit of water with the hose down where i think it it might be but got nothing. I've double and triple checked the garage floor and the drive way from when i backed out and still can't find it.

Usually there are only so many places a bolt can fall and get caught. I.E-crossmembers, radiator fixtures. I can usually feel the bolt before i can see it. Just keep feeling with your hand and a flash light. Also, bouncing the car sometimes dislodges them. But i guess you tried that already. Goodluck.
