Compared to a guaranteed 1MB/Sec on cable for every download consistantly.I had problems with torrents about 2 years ago, very slow, couldn't find what I wanted, etc. I now use them and have no problems. I download very fast, have found very, VERY old things, such as NFS 3: Hot Pursuit on PC. I own the game but it is scratched so it stops during installation. Yes, sometimes DL speeds are a tad slow (30 kb/s) but I reach near 250 kb/s which is about the maximum I usually download on a steady basis, not peak. IMO, it's just your experience with them and maybe you haven't used the right tools, who knows...but simply saying newsgroups > torrents just because of your experience doesnt make it true for everyone else's experience.
As far as obscure, I found Jedi Academy the other day in two seconds to replace some scratched discs I had (don't know why I had a craving for the multiplayer in that game lol). If you need something that you can't find it takes two seconds to post a request and some nerd will take great joy in digging it out of his file server and posting it up for you in a day.
All that said I do use torrents once in a while if I absolutely can't find what I need somewhere else.
RE: Private trackers the ones I was a part of back in the day were all Ratio driven. I want to purely leech without penalty instead of sapping my upload speed all day and night and redflagging me to my ISP. Is this still the case or have they moved away from this?
