Torrent sites?

The stuff you can find in Newsgroups I can get on any of the scene trackers and max out my download connection. The real advantage is the obscure stuff (particularly music) that is simply not available in various Newsgroups. The retention is a major issue for me.

101 Days retention+ is the norm these days. And thats HARD retention, DIRECT downloads, not a million people's unreliable comcast connection to rely on. If you are looking for something REALLY obscure, the files DO exist more often in torrent trackers, but good luck finding seeders for them. If you do, have fun waiting 15 days for the one person seeding to let you leech it.

I have better luck just making requests in the appropriate newsgroup if I need something uncommon. Newsgroup posters are insane file *****s with TBs on TBs of data.

if you know what to look for... your good...

All I know is I get more software music and video sooner and faster with usenet by a large margin. I feel that newsgroups are always first, and are the major pipeline of data and torrents slowly leak off of that pipline and begin to establish a flow of their own.

The other main selling point to me is the lack of a P2P publicly trackable connection. You can obscure yourself if you want to but I like hte idea of a private agreement with a contract that says that usenetserver.com won't keep records of any downloads by a user so even if they are subpeonaed I don't have to sweat it.

Sorry, but you are talking like I haven't experienced both sides. I have. I'm a member on some of the most elite private trackers on the net and I have used Newsgroups before.

I'm not talking like anything. This is obviously my experience, which while subjective, is not untrue. Torrents seem clumsy and unreliable to me.

You must not have been a member of any decent private trackers... evar.

Not saying newsgroups **** at all, just saying both are good and have their advantages.

I had problems with torrents about 2 years ago, very slow, couldn't find what I wanted, etc. I now use them and have no problems. I download very fast, have found very, VERY old things, such as NFS 3: Hot Pursuit on PC. I own the game but it is scratched so it stops during installation. Yes, sometimes DL speeds are a tad slow (30 kb/s) but I reach near 250 kb/s which is about the maximum I usually download on a steady basis, not peak. IMO, it's just your experience with them and maybe you haven't used the right tools, who knows...but simply saying newsgroups > torrents just because of your experience doesnt make it true for everyone else's experience.

Eh if you get a good private tracker (hence everyone must seed back to continue to be a member) You can get 300-400 Kbps. Good enough for me.

Newsgroups and torrents are both great if you ask me. I just use torrents more.
