Too much bass?

I'm currently running a Kicker CVT 12" ported w/ zx400.1 amp. My front speakers are Kicker KS650.2 componants off a zx250.2 (85w x2ch) in a Tahoe.

On a lot of stuff, it sounds great to me. But there is some stuff that the bass isn't tight enough or I can't get it hitting hard enough. I listen to mostly power metal and speed metal (Symphony X, Slayer, Megadeth, Dragonforce), but sometimes I listen to other forms of rock or rap (Pharcyde, Dr Octagon, Outkast, Eric B & Rakim)

I was going to upgrade to 2 CVX 12"s sealed. That's 1500rms. My worry is that this will just be WAY overkill. I figure I could just turn the levels down and at least I can crank it when I want to.

Some songs even on my 400w need to be turned down. But on other songs I keep trying to crank the bass and it starts to distort. I hear something like vibrating plastic. I do have vibration issues in my back doors/windows, but this is the speaker.

I'm starting to think a single CVX 12 (750rms) would be plenty loud in a sealed enclosure. Much louder and cleaner than the CVT ported.

Suggestions?

If you want "tight" bass, get rid of that ported box, and go sealed. Ported boxes are ment to get low, and usually used for rap. Sealed is more for what you're looking for.

btw, why make another thread

some music just doesnt have alot of bass in it...
I understand that. Certain CD's I know just won't get bass-y. But I'm talking about CD's that I have heard on bigger systems (Like Symphony-X or White Zombie) and the bass sounds great loud.

Why not try the CVT in a sealed enclosure? That will help with the "tightness" you refer to. That's what I would try before changing the whole setup.
I thought of that, but the main issue with the CVT is the volume on some CDs. When the bass isn't low and boomy, it doesn't meet my expectations. I. E. quick double bass that's at a higher frequency than the low single note booms. I know the seald box would tighten the quick bass up, but it would also make it not hit as hard, right?

The CVT range is 25-350hz, where the CVX is 20-500. I figure that might make the difference. Plus the CVX is supposed to be made stronger so it doesn't distort so much.

Try it sealed... plug the port and see how it sounds -- you may need to remove the sub and throw in a few wood blocks to reduce the internal airspace (depending on your enclosure size).

If you still don't like it, then consider the CVX -- and remember, just because the CVX's are rated to handle 750W RMS, it doesn't mean you have to run that much to them... especially if you are worried about them drowning out the rest of your system. Shoot, if you get the right VC config., you could try them off of your 400.1.
